30 March 2009 Source : MAP Doha - Foreign ministers of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) -Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia- held, Sunday in Doha, a consultation meeting to examine coordination of stances with regard to meetings in which the AMU will take part, particularly at regional level.
During this meeting, held on the sidelines of the preparatory meeting for the 21st Doha Summit, due on Monday and Tuesday, the AMU Secretary-General, Habib Benyahya, gave an overview of the Maghreb sectoral meetings. Benyahya told the press the meeting discussed the evolution of the Union and means to give impetus to the Maghreb action, as well as the future meetings at ministerial and expert levels as well as at the level of high-level officials and businessmen. The AMU was launched in February 1989 in Marrakech at the initiative of Morocco's late king Hassan II. It set for itself a fundamental goal to close Maghreb countries' ranks on all levels and secure free movement of people and goods. However, the Union has stumbled due to inter-Maghreb rifts.
